[UPDATE!] The Dark Knight Massacre: No Joke.

UPDATE 7/25 11AM:

[TMZ] JAMES HOLMES Sent Massacre Plans to Professor BEFORE Shootings

James Holmes spelled out gory details of his planned massacre in a notebook which he mailed to a University of Colorado professor … more than a week before he opened fire in the Aurora movie theater.

Police and FBI discovered the notebook while searching a mail room on the Aurora campus on Monday … but it had reportedly been sitting there unopened since July 12 — EIGHT days before the shootings that killed 12 people and injured 58.

The package was sent from Holmes, and according to a source … “Inside the package was a notebook full of details about how he was going to kill people. There were drawings of what he was going to do in it — drawings and illustrations of the massacre.”

The source says the drawings included gun-wielding stick figures shooting other stick figures.

The notebook was reportedly addressed to a professor/psychiatrist who treated patients at the campus’ psychiatry facility. It’s unknown if the professor ever had contact with Holmes.

Earlier this year, Holmes dropped out of the university’s neuroscience doctoral program, where he had studied mental health issues.

CHRISTIAN BALE Visiting ‘Batman’ Shooting Victims in Colorado

2:30 PM [TMZ] One of the shooting victims, Carey Rottman, was so excited to meet Bale … he posted a photo of the hospital visit to his Facebook page moments ago (above).

Rottman is recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg he suffered in the attack.

“Dark Knight Rises” star Christian Bale is currently in Denver, CO … visiting the victims and families of last week’s movie theater shooting.

According to KDVR, Bale has been spotted at Aurora Medical Center … where he reportedly arrived by ambulance around 2PM … most likely to enter the building under the radar.

A rep for Warner Bros. released a statement saying, “Mr. Bale is there as himself, not representing Warner Brothers.”

It’s unclear when Bale arrived in Denver.

Bale’s film was playing in the Century 16 theater in Aurora, CO when James Holmes opened fire on the crowd … killing 12 people and injuring 58 others.

Bale has not made a public appearance since the incident.

(Reuters) – Christian Bale, the actor behind the Batman mask in “The Dark Knight Rises,” visited victims of last week’s movie theater shooting as they recovered at an Aurora, Colorado, hospital on Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the facility said.

Emily Crowley, spokeswoman for the Medical Center of Aurora, confirmed that the movie star was at the hospital Tuesday afternoon but did not give any details.

Bill Voloch, interim president of the medical center, told The Denver Post newspaper that Bale spent about 2.5 hours at the hospital, where he met with five people still being treated for their injuries. Two others victims came from a different facility to meet Bale, Voloch said.

A picture of Bale posing in the hospital next to a young man, identified by the Denver Post as victim Carey Rottman, was posted on the newspaper’s website and on Twitter.

A spokeswoman for the actor was not immediately available to comment or provide further details.

Bale also met with doctors, police, paramedics and other first responders to the massacre that resulted when a gunman burst into a movie theater in Aurora, a suburb of Denver, and opened fire on the audience at a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises,” killing 12 people and injuring 58 more.

Bale also spent time with Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, the Denver Post reported.

IN REMEMBRANCE: Victims of the Dark Knight Massacre

You Might Think Your The Joker But This Is No Joke

[TMZ] One of the victims in the James Holmes mass murder spree has lawyered up and plans to file a lawsuit … because he feels the theater dropped the ball in a very fatal way.

Torrence Brown, Jr. was in Century 16 Theater when Holmes let loose. One of Brown’s best friends, A.J. Boik, was shot in the chest and died. Brown, who was not physically injured, claims to now suffer from extreme trauma.

Brown has hired attorney Donald Karpel to rep him. Karpel tells TMZ … he is targeting 3 defendants.

1. The theater. Karpel claims it was negligent for the theater to have an emergency door in the front that was not alarmed or guarded. It’s widely believed Holmes entered the theater with a ticket, propped the emergency door open from inside, went to his car and returned with guns.

2. Holmes’ doctors. Karpel says it appears Holmes was on several medications — prescribed by one or more doctors — at the time of the shooting and he believes the docs did not properly monitor Holmes.

3. Warner Bros. Karpel says “Dark Knight Rises” was particularly violent and Holmes mimicked some of the action. The attorney says theater goers were helpless because they thought the shooter was part of the movie. Karpel tells TMZ, “Somebody has to be responsible for the rampant violence that is shown today.”

07/23/12 Update 3:05PM: JAMES HOLMES STRANGE BEHAVIOR In Colorado Court

[TMZ] “Dark Knight” shooter James Holmesappeared in court moments ago … sporting red-orange hair … a red jumpsuit … and a very bizarre demeanor.Holmes was informed he will be charged with FIRST DEGREE MURDER for killing 12 people in a Colorado movie theater on Friday. The formal charges are expected to be filed soon.Holmes appeared sedated in court — constantly opening his eyes widely … and then appearing to doze off while the judge was speaking. At one point, he began to blink wildly.Holmes did not say a word during the hearing.

The judge informed Holmes that he will be kept in custody on a no-bail hold due to the egregious nature of the crimes he’s been accused of committing.

Holmes has been forbidden from contacting any of the victims or their families.

Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers addressed the media outside of the courthouse … and said prosecutors have NOT decided if they will pursue the death penalty.

Prosecutors also said they do not know if Holmes was on any kind of medication during the hearing.

Prosecutors believe Holmes’ trial won’t start until a year from now.

07/21/12 Update 3:05PM:

[NYDailyNews] James Holmes in solitary” ‘All the inmates were talking about killing him.’

Remorseless mass-murder suspect James Holmes was locked up alone Saturday over fears that the self-proclaimed Joker would become a target for other inmates.

The man accused in the Colorado movie theater massacre was still behaving erratically on the day after his rampage at a midnight screening of “The Dark Night Rises” — the last film in the Batman trilogy.

“Let’s just say he hasn’t shown any remorse,” a jail employee told the Daily News. “He thinks he’s acting in a movie.” A released inmate said Holmes’ behavior behind bars was increasingly irrational.

“He was spitting at the door and spitting at the guards,” the inmate told The News. “He’s spitting at everything. Dude was acting crazy.” Holmes, 24, was also placed on suicide watch in solitary confinement before eating a jailhouse breakfast of grits and sausage, according to a cafeteria worker. Two other just-released inmates said the concerns of Arapahoe Detention Center officials over Holmes’ life were well-founded.

“All the inmates were talking about killing him,” Wayne Medley, 24, said as he left the facility. “Everyone was looking for an opportunity. It’s all they could talk about.” Freed inmate Dima Danilov, 22, said the suspect’s face was covered with a red towel when he arrived at the jail about two hours after 12 people were killed and 58 wounded inside an Aurora, Colo., multiplex.

Holmes — who had dyed his hair red — was also wearing red clothing beneath the black body armor that terrified moviegoers saw when he opened fire early Friday morning, Danilov said. Jail guards “blacked out his windows with duct tape so no one could see him,” said Danilov. “He was cuffed in the back and had leg shackles. Six officers were walking him.” The deranged suspected killer, a former honors student and Ph.D. candidate, said nothing and walked slowly to his cell.

Danilov said that if Holmes was released into the general jail population, “he won’t live to see Monday’s court appearance.” A released inmate said Holmes’ behavior behind bars was increasingly irrational. Holmes is due for his first court appearance on Monday morning. He could face the death penalty, if found mentally competent and convicted in the murder spree. Cops returned Saturday for a second day to Holmes’ suburban Denver apartment, which was rigged with chemical and explosive booby-traps by its jailed tenant before his rampage.

Eleven of the victims shot during the midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” remained in critical condition Saturday at Colorado hospitals. According to NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly, the mass killer declared that “he was the Joker, enemy of Batman” after the massacre ended.

07/21/12 Update 3:05PM:

[TMZ] CHRISTIAN BALE ‘Words Cannot Express the Horror I Feel’

Christian Bale,
star of “Dark Knight Rises,” just released a statement regarding the massacre in Colorado.

Bale says, “Words cannot express the horror that I feel. I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them.”

His words mirror those of “Dark Knight” director Chris Nolan, who called James Holmes’ actions“savage” and “senseless” just yesterday.

Christian co-star Anne Hathaway were seen jetting out of Paris yesterday after a premiere for the film there was cancelled.

Warner Bros. has also cancelled appearances for the cast scheduled in Mexico and Japan.

07/21/12 Update 12:55PM:

[TMZ] Cops Disarm First Explosive Device in James Holmes’ Apt.

Police in Aurora, CO have disarmed the trip wire and first explosive device at the apartment of James Holmes, the suspect in Colorado shooting massacre.Cops have no timetable for how long it will take to disarm all the devices inside the apartment, but they are “confident” they will complete the task today.Police say there are approximately 30 various devices inside and an additional 30 aerial shells.Holmes told police his apartment was booby-trapped at the time of his arrest. Since then, however, police say he has been uncooperative.

07/20/12 UPDATE: 11:37PM

[Director] Christopher Nolan has released a statement:

“Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families.”

What We Know About James Holmes So Far

AURORA – There is one suspect in custody after 12 people were shot and killed at the Century 16 Movie Theaters at the Aurora Town Center. There were at least 59 people were shot, according to Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates. Oates says 10 died at the theater and two died at the area hospital.

The new Batman movie called “The Dark Knight Rises” was opening at the theater during the shooting.

9NEWS has confirmed Jessica Ghawi, a former intern at the Fan, was one of the victims of the shooting. Ghawi survived the Eaton Center mall shooting in Toronto on June 2 which left seven people injured and one dead. Read her blog about the experience.

NBC News has confirmed through two federal sources the shooting suspect’s name is James Holmes. He is 24 years old.

“The University of Colorado Denver – Aschutz Medical Campus can confirm that Holmes was in the process of withdrawing from the University of Colorado Denver’s graduate program in neurosciences,” the university released on Friday.

Holmes family in California released the following statement regarding the shooting:

“Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved. We ask that the media respect our privacy during this difficult time. Our family is cooperating with authorities in both San Diego, California and Aurora, Colorado. We are still trying to process this information and we appreciate that people will respect our privacy.”

Police say Holmes “appeared” at the front of one of the theaters, threw some type of gas or explosive device and started shooting. Police recovered two handguns, one shotgun and an assault rifle. Holmes was wearing a bulletproof vest, according to federal authorities.

“It was chaotic,” one witness told 9NEWS. “We saw people running. We heard screaming from other theaters.”

“It was actually during a shootout scene during the movie where this popping started happening,” Donovan Tate told 9NEWS. “I thought it was like fireworks or firecrackers like someone playing a prank or joke. Oh yeah, it was surreal,” Tate said. “It was horrific site. Once outside, you saw people with blood all over their clothes. I had friends scattered throughout the theater. Some were hit, but none of them were too serious. Another one of my friends we’re not too sure about him, but we’re praying for him.”

“I walked out and to my right, there was a girl shot in her knee – holding onto her mom and crying,” another witness said. “I actually went to the back of the building where there were more victims. A guy with his leg blown open … another guy shot in the foot … a lady shot in her hand.”

Defense officials tell NBC News that two US Air Force reservists and one Navy service member were among those wounded in the overnight shooting spree in Aurora.

The identities and condition of the three US military service members are unavailable.

The defense officials say, as of now, no US service members were killed.

“The first thing we saw when we got out of the doors is a girl – [maybe] 13 or 14 years old with a gunshot wound to her chest,” Shayla Roeder, who was in theater 8 at the time of the shooting, said. “She had this horrible look in her eyes. That’s when we realized I think things were actually real. Every time we walked 10 or 15 steps, we would see someone walk out with blood [all] over them [and] cops following them saying they needed an ambulance.”

“When you first see him, you don’t know if he’s a part of the movie, or a part of the act,” Auston Ivey said. “When [the gas canisters] hit the ground, it just started spinning. Being that it went off right next to us, it was hard to breathe. The first thing we immediately did was duck. All we could think about was getting to the door as fast as I could. “There was people limping, saying ‘I’ve been shot, I’ve been shot.'”

“He pulled out a gun and just started randomly shooting people,” Sierra Graves, who was also in theater 9, said. “He was hitting families, and people, just randomly, nobody specific.”

9NEWS Reporter Jeremy Jojola interviewed two eyewitnesses who were in the theater when the shooting started.

“I saw a man walk in through the exit,” one eyewitness told Jojola. “{He] looked like he had a gas mask on.”

The witnesses say he threw two gas canisters into the theater after busting down the door. The witnesses said no one reacted at first – thinking he was a stunt for the movie.

“He looked so calm when he did it,” the eyewitness said. “It was like scary. He waited for both the bombs to explode before he did anything. Then, after both of them exploded, he began to shoot.”

The witnesses said he – at first – fired into the air and then started shooting towards the people.

“He had no specific target. He just started letting loose,” the eyewitness said.

Both witnesses said one of the scariest parts was the shooter didn’t say a word.

“Honestly, I thought I was gonna get shot,” the eyewitness said. “I thought there was no way I was going to get out of there without getting shot.”

Another eyewitness spoke to 9NEWS Reporter Brandon Rittiman about the mass shooting.

“It was a shootout scene,” Alex Milano, who was in the movie theater next to the one where the shooting took place, said. “There were guns firing. Then, loud bangs came from the right of the theater. Smoke took over the entire theater and everything, and it was really thick. No one could really see anything.”

Milano told Rittiman he and her sister thought the shooter was part of the movie.

“Me and my sister and my friends were wondering what was going on,” Milano said. “Then, at that point, I saw something come through the wall. Multiple objects flew through the wall. I saw holes in the wall.”

People slowly started to get up out of their seats and evacuate, Milano said.

“People stood up and started checking themselves,” Milano said. “A couple of people were walking away, holding areas. I heard moaning like they were in pain. That’s when I started to get worried.”

Even at that point, Milano said there was mass confusion in the theater.

“We didn’t really know something was happening until someone came [in] from the left entrance and told us we shouldn’t go outside because there was a guy with a gun out there,” Milano said.

Milano said he walked out of the theater and instantly smelled the tear gas bomb in the nearby theater.

“It was very thick, and it was choking me,” Milano said. “I couldn’t breathe at all. That’s when the alarm started to sound, and that’s when we knew things were serious. As soon as the alarm sounded, everyone stood up and started to make their way to the exit.”

Milano said, at that point, he started to talk to witnesses who were in theater 9.

“I don’t want to upset anybody by anything I say, but I don’t think anyone should be kept in the dark about what happened,” Milano told Rittiman. “The witness in theatre 9 was a young woman. I had asked her if she saw anything or if anything happened. What she described, at first, I didn’t translate well because it sounded like madness to me. She said a man taller then her kicked through the door, and she said he was in a riot helmet. She said he had a bulletproof vest on. She said he was completely covered in black with guns. She said, after that point when she saw he was holding a gun, her and her boyfriend dropped to the floor and started to crawl to see if they could get away. They got up and started to run through the emergency exit. She said that when she turned around, all she saw was the guy slowly making his way up the stairs and just firing … just picking random people.”

Milano saw people coming out of the theater injured.

“I saw at least four or five people limping, wounded [and] slightly bloody,” Milano said. “The most that I saw was a girl who was covered in blood, and she didn’t have any wounds on her. It made me think the worst.”

Milano says he also saw a little girl who looked extremely injured.

“A cop came walking through the door carrying a little girl in his arms and she wasn’t moving. The really messed up part to me was [another witness] told whoever that she was talking to that she saw bullet holes in the little girl’s back. I honestly can’t think of any person who would intentionally hurt a little girl, so unfortunately, I think she just got caught in the crossfire.”

Milano says his sister grabbed his arm and wanted to leave immediately.

“It was terrifying,” Milano said. “As the older brother, you tell yourself over and over again, ‘Don’t lose your mind, don’t lose your head. Keep calm and keep stress free so that you can help the ones who can’t.’ My little sister, unfortunately, was one of those. She was in tears, shaking, gripping as tight as she could to my arm and not letting go. Where I went, she wanted to be close to me. It is the scary thought that runs through your mind that you know you have to do everything you can do keep her safe, and at the same time you are worrying about everyone else.”

Holmes, after being captured by police, told authorities he had explosive materials in his apartment. The police went to Holmes’ apartment building at East 17th Avenue and Peoria Street in Aurora.

FBI agents and police used a hook and ladder fire truck to reach Holmes’ apartment. They put a camera at the end of a 12-foot pole inside the apartment and discovered the unit was booby-trapped. Authorities evacuated five buildings as they tried to figure how to disarm the flammable and explosive material.

“[The suspect] lives on the third floor in the back,” Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said. “We have a whole bunch of bomb techs from a whole bunch of agencies. WE have pictures inside the location. We are trying to determine how to disarm flammable or explosive material that’s in there. We could be here for hours. We could be here for days trying to get in there and get whatever evidence there is. The pictures are pretty disturbing. It looks pretty sophisticated in terms of how it’s booby-trapped.”

Police evacuated the building and surrounding buildings as a precaution.

“This could be a very long wait,” Oates said. “We don’t know how long we are going to be here.”

9NEWS has confirmed Holmes is scheduled to appear in court to face charges Monday at 8:30 a.m.

Nicole Williams, with Swedish Medical Center, says the hospital was alerted to a mass casualty incident at 1:15 a.m. Friday.

Williams says the hospital was told to prepare for at least 20 patients. University Hospital confirmed to 9NEWS the youngest patient they had in their care was 3 months old. Hospital officials say the baby was not shot, but was taken into the hospital as a precautionary measure after the shooting.

“This is ridiculous,” the eyewitness told Jojola. “We really want to know what was the point of it? There’s no sense to it. We have no idea what to make of it. He’s shooting little kids, he’s shooting adults, he’s shooting our friends we went to school with. It’s just sad.”

Both of the eyewitnesses grew up going to this movie theater.

“It was just a terrible sight,” the eyewitness said.

Watch the full interview with two eyewitnesses below:

People started to flock to the theater once they learned about the shooting – checking to see if their friends and family were OK.

“We’ve been saying for a long time, this theater is not the safest theater in Aurora,” one witness told 9NEWS Reporter Kevin Torres. “But when we go see movies here – I came to see Men in Black III [the other day] – there were two or three officers up front all the time. How are you supposed to know who’s the bad guy and who’s the good guy when something like this happens.”

The witness said he knew a 12-year-old who was going to see the movie at the theater.

“All I know is the 12-year-old is OK,” the witness said. “I’m not sure if he was in the theaters, but we know that he came to see the movie. I know he was taken to Gateway High School.”

Corbin Dayton was sitting in the second row of the theater when the shooting started.

“The only image that sticks with me is the guy walking in through the door, throwing a gas can and a gun,” Dayton said. “That’s the only thing that sticks and replays.”

Bev Marquez, a licensed counselor, spoke to 9NEWS regarding how people can start to respond to traumatic events.

“It takes a lot of energy to compose ourselves after this kind of crisis, and sometimes there’s this fatigue that sets in, and our raw emotions will come out,” Marquez told 9NEWS.
